Director of Jewish Student Life

University of Kentucky is searching for a vibrant, committed Director of Jewish Student Life with a strong background in Jewish practice and community development to engage, empower, and inspire students. The candidate should have proven leadership skills, including experience managing programs and engaging people, and familiarity with budgeting, program development, and community building.


The Director of Jewish Student Life will work with University of Kentucky staff and students as well as members of the local Jewish community to create and deliver dedicated programs that contribute to the engagement and retention of Jewish students.


What you’ll bring to the job:

  • Master’s degree in Jewish Studies, Community Leadership, or a related course of study or experiences. Past experience in community organizing, university life, student leadership development, customer service, and Jewish education are a plus.

  • Experience in administration, programming, fundraising, and community leadership.

  • Knowledge about network management and social networking processes.

  • Strong computer skills including  web design and social media.

  • The ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders.

  • Creativity, flexibility, and excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership development skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and constituents, a strong work ethic, and a sense of humor.

  • Sense of entrepreneurship, and ability to learn from situations when things don’t turn out the way you thought they would.


Job Expectations:

Student Engagement and Leadership Development

  • Design a vision for Jewish student life on campus, as well as execute the strategy for helping UK meaningfully engage more Jewish students on campus.

  • Develop a student leadership structure and engagement strategy that supports robust program activities, Shabbat and holiday celebration and enables current UK Jewish student organizations (Hillel at UK and Chabad at UK, Jewish students at local colleges and universities) to connect with uninvolved students and to create relevant meaningful Jewish experiences.

  • Identify involved, under-involved, and uninvolved students and develop strategies for contacting, serving, and engaging them.

  • Define, track and evaluate metrics to illustrate progress and growth.

  • In cooperation with the Jewish Studies Program and with the local community, create and implement pluralistic, inclusive, innovative Jewish education and programming on campus, engaging with and encouraging students to develop meaningful and enduring commitment to Jewish life and learning. Delegate leadership and responsibilities for activities to others, empowering students to develop these initiatives.

  • Engage faculty and staff from UK and other local colleges and universities in program development and student support.

  • In cooperation with the Office for Institutional Diversity, Religious Advisory Staff, Martin Luther King Center, and other campus partners, create and implement inclusive activities to promote diversity, inclusion, and understanding throughout the university community.

  • Train, supervise, and evaluate student interns.

  • Listen actively to students and other campus community members in order to identify strengths, weaknesses, and leadership potential in others, to connect them with the right opportunities to develop.

  • Assume a leadership role in challenging situations and inspire others as a role model.

  • Publicize, provide/coordinate logistical support, and attend programs on and off campus, including some nights and weekends.


Strategic Planning and Management

  • Work with Advisory Board and students to develop a mission and vision for the Office of Jewish Student Life.

  • Promote a dynamic and innovative vision for Jewish life on campus.

  • Partner and serve as a campus liaison with Enrollment Management and academic units to support targeted recruitment of Jewish students and their families.

  • .

  • Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and stewardship of resources in partnership with the campus advisory committee.

  • Provide leadership in marketing, public relations, and promotional activities.

  • Partner with Hillel International to ensure that Hillel at UK incubates initiatives and remains committed to the global vision of the Hillel movement and to future independent sustainability.

  • Provide Advisory Board  members with the information they require, enabling them to make informed decisions and fulfill their responsibilities.

  • Manage the office team of employees, interns, and volunteers to  achieve the designated outcomes and measures of success.


Fiscal Management

  • Oversee engagement and programmatic expenditures and provide ongoing budget supervision, in consultation with acting supervisor on campus.

  • With input from the Advisory Board, develop and implement a strategic approach to financial resource development, including fundraising campaigns, benefit events, and major gift cultivation.

  • Manage fiscal relationships with grantors


Community relations

  • Serve as a representative of the Jewish student community on campus and work cooperatively with appropriate departments and faculty to strengthen Jewish campus life.

  • Develop campus and community relationships to contribute to effective responses to events that impact Jewish students and the Jewish community.

  • Along with other Jewish community leaders on and off campus, serve as a representative of Jewish life and the Jewish community in Lexington and the larger Kentucky region.


Professional Development

  • Participate in professional development activities through UK as well as Hillel International with input from local supervisor.

  • Participate in ongoing learning and growth with students.
