The Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass is proud to be the only Federation in North America to sponsor an Equine Division. Created about 10 years ago, the division is made up of men and women who have some role in the horse industry: some are horse farm owners and managers; some are veterinarians; some are horse trainers. All are committed to supporting the Jewish community locally and overseas.
The members of the Equine Division have adopted a special program in Israel, the Horseback Riding Therapy Program at Ben Yakir, a Youth Aliyah Village for disadvantaged teens who need to be in a residential treatment center. They have raised funds to purchase a horse, rebuild a stable, build an equine library, purchase feed and supplies, and provide additional staff hours of therapy for those in need. Several members of our community have visited Ben Yakir and we have hosted the program’s director, Gabi Azoulay, here in Lexington.
