Adult Education
JFB hosts several educational events throughout the year which are open to all.
Global Day of Jewish Learning
Every year in November, our community joins Jewish communities around the world to learn about aspects of Judaism relating to a predetermined theme, set by the Global Day initiative.
Locally, Jewish community scholars and guest lecturers lead interesting workshops, discussions, or lectures relating to the year’s theme. These programs often coincide with religious school programming so that our children have opportunities to learn alongside us. We hope you’ll expand your Jewish knowledge and join us at our next Global Day event!
Visit our Community Calendar to find details about this year’s Global Day opportunities, or contact daniel@jewishlexington.org for details.
One Book Jewish Lexington
One Book Jewish Lexington is co-sponsored by Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass and organized by the Lexington Chapter of Hadassah. The Hadassah Book Club selects a book centered around a particular Jewish theme or topic which the whole community is invited to read. Then, at a predetermined date, participants gather for a discussion and social programming. Occasionally, guest speakers are invited to participate in the discussion and/or present on a topic relevant to the chosen book.
Contact daniel@jewishlexington.org for more information.
Yom HaShoah Commemoration
Jewish Lexington’s community-wide Holocaust Remembrance Day includes a memorial candle lighting, choir music, and recitation of traditional prayers such as the Mourner’s Kaddish.
The commemoration also features readings of the winning essays in the Emilie Szekely Holocaust Essay Contest, which is coordinated by the Szekely family and honors Fayette County students in elementary, middle, and high school who write essays meant to increase Holocaust awareness. As an opportunity to learn and grow, we also come together during our commemoration for presentations and roundtable discussions about a number of Holocaust-related topics. Often, community members will facilitate these discussions.
