At JFB, we strive to support the wider Lexington community and give back where we can. Below, you can find upcoming projects and past events that have helped us to make a difference. If you have questions about these or other events, or if you’d like to suggest your own community outreach project, please feel free to call our offices at 859-268-0672.
Gleaning with Glean Kentucky
It was wonderful for us to work together on a beautiful day to fulfill the Jewish values of providing nutritious food to people in need while simultaneously caring for the environment by keeping edible food out of the landfill.
There were 16 volunteers who gleaned 58 boxes of apples amounting to 1566 pounds, which is a little more than 3/4 of a ton. These apples were delivered to 10 different agencies!
To learn more, check out their website at www.gleanky.org and/or look at their annual report.
The imperative to glean comes from the Torah: “When you reap the harvest in your field and overlook a sheaf in the field, do not turn back to get it; it shall go to the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow – in order that your God may bless you in all of your undertakings.” (Deut. 24:19)
Antisemitism Town Hall
with the Lexington Police Department
The Jewish community joined members of the Lexington Police Department and a representative of the local office of the FBI for a discussion on antisemitism and what to do when faced with it. Around 50 community members participated in-person or via the virtual livestream coordinated by Ohavay Zion Synagogue.
Video of program will be available soon.
